Silver Cord Program

The Silver Cord Program is a special graduation honor that recognizes Atlantic High School students for their commitment to volunteerism. Students who complete 200 volunteer hours during their high school years will graduate wearing a distinguished silver cord along with their cap and gown, and the student with the most volunteer hours who also completes a volunteer portfolio will receive a $1,000 scholarship provided by the Atlantic Area Chamber of Commerce.

Who Can Participate?

All Atlantic High School students are eligible. You can start earning hours the summer before your freshman year. Students must complete at least 50 hours per year, with a total of 200 hours by May 1st of their senior year. Hours will be prorated for new students.

Requirements & Guidelines

  • Total of 200 hours required; no more than 50% of hours can come from one organization.
  • Must volunteer with at least three different organizations or businesses.
  • Hours must be unpaid and cannot be earned during school hours.

Scholarship Opportunity

The graduating senior with the highest number of approved hours and a complete portfolio will be receive a $1,000 scholarship (non-renewable), awarded by the Atlantic Area Chamber of Commerce after proof of college enrollment. This will be awarded on Class Night.

How to Get Started

Sign Up

Complete the Student/Parent Agreement Form and return it to your guidance counselor before you begin any volunteer hours.

Get Your Badge

Once approved, you’ll receive your Silver Cord Badge

Find Opportunities
  • Browse volunteer listings at www.AtlanticIowa.com
  • Watch for quarterly emails with opportunities
  • Contact local businesses, churches, or the Atlantic Area Chamber of Commerce
  • Get pre-approval for any volunteer work not already listed
Track Your Hours
  • Have your event/activity supervisor sign your Volunteer Hour Tracking Sheet.
  • Submit your completed forms to your guidance counselor regularly.

Example of Service Opportunities

  • Tutoring or mentoring
  • School garden projects
  • Community clean-ups
  • Blood drives
  • Library summer reading programs
  • Church mission trips or VBS
  • Assisting at local Chamber events like the Easter Egg Hunt, AtlanticFest, or Christmas in Atlantic

Note: Activities like court-ordered service, paid work for family businesses, travel to/from events, or volunteer hours used for another program (e.g., Eagle Scouts) are not eligible.
